Spring Boot 4.2.0-RC2 Available Now

Spring Boot 4.2.0-RC2 is on Maven Central, two weeks after RC1. The release contains 99 enhancements, documentation improvements, dependency upgrades and bug fixes. It is the last planned stop before the 4.2.0 GA later this month.

Two changes stand out. First, Reactor Netty-based WebFlux applications now honor the X-Forwarded-Prefix header, which fixes generated links and redirects for apps deployed behind a path-rewriting reverse proxy or ingress. Second, the spring.data.redis.database property now applies to master/replica connections as well. Previously the setting was ignored there, so replica reads could silently hit database 0.

Because Spring Boot 4.0 OSS support ends on December 31, 2026, teams still on 4.0 should test against RC2 now so that a later GA upgrade is a formality. The full release notes are on the Spring Boot wiki.

Spring Cloud 2026.0.0-RC2 (Paddington) Released

The Spring Cloud 2026.0.0-RC2 release train, codenamed Paddington, is built on Spring Boot 4.2.0-RC2. Every module in the train is at 5.1.0-RC2. Artifacts are published to the Spring milestone repository.

Notable additions in this RC:

  • Spring Cloud Config adds Google Cloud Storage as a Config Server backend and can serve plain-text and binary files as a Resource.
  • Spring Cloud Gateway adds a LocalResponseCache filter for the Server Web MVC flavor, matching what WebFlux users already had.
  • Spring Cloud OpenFeign now sends nested @SpringQueryMap objects as nested query parameters instead of flattening or dropping them.

The GCS backend is the most useful of these for teams on Google Cloud, who no longer need a Git repo or a custom EnvironmentRepository to keep config next to their other GCP resources. As announced with RC1, Spring Cloud Bus is now part of Spring Cloud Stream, so check your dependency coordinates when you upgrade.

This Week in Spring: Cloud Foundry in kind and Spring AI Recipes for MCP Apps

Josh Long's November 3 "This Week in Spring" is mostly a hands-on tutorial. It covers running Cloud Foundry locally inside a kind (Kubernetes-in-Docker) cluster, installing the cf CLI, and pushing a Spring Boot app, which gives a disposable local CF environment without a full platform install.

The roundup also links new Spring AI recipes from Craig Walls on two topics: rendering rich UIs through MCP Apps, the interactive UI extension in the 2026-07-28 MCP specification, and speeding up RAG pipelines with faster embedding generation. There is also a step-by-step Spring Boot 3.5 to 4 migration guide, which is timely now that 3.5 OSS support has ended, and a pointer to coverage of the Spring Boot 4.2 release candidate.
